Sun Microsystems Receives 30 Project Ideas for Project: Change Tomorrow SINGAPORE – June 15, 2009 – Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA) today announced the Singapore finals for Open Jive Challenge 2009. This regional challenge pits student developers from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines to create applications and web 2.0 platforms built on open source technologies. Singapore’s local Open Jive finals will be held on 17 and 18 June 2009 at ITE College East. More information is available at: http://sg.sun.com/sunnews/events/2009/openjive/ Winners of each local leg of the challenge will stand a chance to compete against other winning projects from the region. The theme for this year’s Open Jive Challenge is Project: Change Tomorrow. Students are challenged to address key world issues with creative use of open source technologies. Project submissions received consist of cutting-edge applications for desktop, web and mobile, that address key issues organizations or countries face today, while fostering interactivity between communities on the Internet. Student developers of today will be the drivers of innovation for tomorrow. Through their perspectives, Sun aims to foster a spirit of discovery and problem solving, tapping on software applications updated and improved by communities. “The student developers have come up with very unique and practical ideas for their projects. Having them address real world problems with the skills they learnt in school bridges their experiences from an academic pursuit to something real and tangible,” said Naveen Asrani, Senior Manager, Global Developer and Outreach Programs. “We hope the experiences they gain from Open Jive will enrich these students and provide them with opportunities to succeed in their upcoming careers.” Other areas of emphasis include market potential and code quality. As part of regional sponsor, Elixir Technology’s support towards the development of applications with worldwide market potential, the company will be presenting a “Market Potential Prize” to the team with a practical application that is applicable to a real-life problem and relevant to a wide range of users. The team with an application that best meets the above criteria will receive a Razer Mamba mouse for each team member. To reward good coding practices, as well as to recognize governance for coding standards, local sponsor Parasoft will be presenting a Code Quality Prize, a 1 Terabyte external hard disk drive for each team member of a team that adheres to the highest standards in maintaining quality code. “With the world facing various challenges from economic to health and socio-political issues, it is heartening to see young student developers address these issues with their creativity and enthusiasm,” said Mr, Lau Shih Hor, CEO of Elixir Technology. “Some of the ideas are very interesting and applicable to real world issues. We certainly look forward to seeing these projects evolve in the future.” “We hope that by helping foster a community of passionate student developers, Parasoft can help lay a solid foundation for quality of development, in tomorrow’s IT professionals.
